my favorite was the one we stopped at in Texas that one time…with all of the transvestites waiting for the truckers to pick them up…man that was one scary place …Remember Kelli thinking they were so pretty she wanted to be one when she grew up! Mel, LOVE the story about the guy with the tooth. I NEVER would have had the balls to not have it put back, but I admire his reasoning.

And everyone, thanks for the love, but I feel just fine and know I look it, too.

Graeme, I do see your point somewhat, but I think it’s a much touchier subject for women for a myriad of reasons.

It was the same in Asia. I remember one day I complained to my Chinese coworker that it was culturally insensitive to comment on my weight, whereas she, in her effort to be culturally sensitive turned to me and said, “Oh I don’t think you are fat…anymore!”

Funny, I got into a conversation about this with my dad and his 70 year old friend the other day. They were complaining about their weight and somehow it was brought over to me, which of course, is not really the same conversation as two old men and their weight gain. We were all on the same page, though. I told them a story of an African American friend of mine who got his whole front tooth knocked out during a game of basketball, root and all. He was about to go to the dentist and have it put back in (For the second time) when his friend’s mother said, “You need to put that back in, because people are going to see a black man missing a front tooth and they will judge you for that.” Whereas my friend said, “What a great way to separate the judgemental people from the people I was to surround myself with! Thank you for pointing that out!” He left it out.

I feel the same way about weight. If I have to lose ten pounds to get attention or make people think I’m a beautiful person, to hell with them I’d rather not have such shallow friends. ; )

I am right there with you. I felt like crying the first time my friends’ aunt pointed to me, puffed out her cheeks, and made a hula-hoop with her arms. When I had seen her the first time I was a very slim 21 yrs, but when I returned six years later I had gained a maximum of 15 lbs. Ridiculous IMO but I was told it was normal to comment on this. I will never and have never become accustomed to it. I have actually told people that it is rude and cut them off. I really could care less if they are offended after what they just said to me. Great topic

Wow, if they are commenting on your weight then I am in big trouble!!! I think you are just simply gorgeous and I mean the whole package!!! Inside and out! You have a amazing zest for life that exudes from your pictures and just the fact that you have taken on being an expat tells me how really amazing you are Tara! I know I have never met you in person but want you to know that I hope one day to have your body!!!! I aspire to that! I get your anxst! People are always going to judge but it is the love we have for ourselves that really matters!!!!

I actually think the Turks have us on this one. I think it should be up for comment. The US has a real issue with weight. They have identified part of the problem as social: the more fat people you know & spend time with, the fatter you are likely to be. This should be a topic of discussion, because it’s not a good thing.

Funny how different cultures see things in a different light.The french think it is a compliment to the chef the more times you belch at the dinner table…here in America, not so much!I say be happy in your own skin and if the rest of the world has a problem with that, then it’s their problem!You are always gorgeous to me!
Try brushing up on and simply returning a “backhanded compliment”…you know,the ones you can’t tell if they are a put down or a compliment….like when someone says to me ” you look really good for a woman your age…especially considering you have had 4 children!” I don’t know is that a good thing or a bad thing…hard to tell…ha!

I have been brought to tears my “well-intentioned” people there for “taking it the wrong way.”

There really is no middle ground, if you’re the ideal weight you’ll get too fat/too thin comments, too thin you’ll get “ai yi yi, what happened to you?” comments, and overweight = green light for the commenter to be a complete a$$hole.

Sorry but it ain’t right. And you look fine, as in FINE *two snaps*

After Barış read this, he told me that a lot of the gypsies “over there” will probably make off with a lot of money for the land they are squatting on. They’ll be paid off to move when they never owned the land in the first place. Not sure if he just told me that to make me feel better or not.

Very interesting subject!

I have a friend who inherited a house in Balat. He’s never stepped foot in it because gypsies moved in years ago and refuse to leave. When he went by (once), they threatened to kill him if he ever came back!

So when Koc University offered him next to nothing for it, he jumped at it. (As did all the other homeowners in the area.)

In his words, “Better something than nothing”.

The point is, sometimes people are squatting on land that is not theirs to begin with.

hey, Ive enjoyed reading your writing but I just wanted to let you know that my husband and I own Fat Boys, the “ridiculously named” cafe in Goreme. Just to let you know its called Fat Boys as our surname ( originally my husbands surname who is born and grew up in goreme) Sisman - pronounced Shishmun, is actually the turkish word for fat. There are also countless Fat Boys bars and restaurants all over the world as we have since discovered! I hope you enjoyed your time in our cafe despite the name!!

Thanks for this beautiful post. I am 22yo from Istanbul and I moved to Athens a couple of years ago cause my fiancee is Greek and I am miserable ever since. I listen to music I used to listen in Istanbul and I look at photos I had from Istanbul and I talk to friends from Istanbul and each time makes me cry and now your post does the exact same thing. Just, an advice… Never let go of this city. You will regret it for the rest of your life. I love my fiancee but I am begging her to move to Turkey with me and she refuses to do so and it just turns my stomach into the tightest knot.

I’m surprised the Boyfriend believed that the most-predictably best food would be at a hotel chain! Istanbul’s got fabulous restaurants…and the best ones are pretty consistent I think (of all $ ranges). Next time tell him you want to go to Kiyi.

Seriously! Funny People was HORRIBLE. I also watched Revolutionary Road last year because of the “buzz” and was bored/depressed beyond belief. Also saw some movie about trains with Travolta and Denzel (love them both) and hated it. The list could go on and on. Wanted to see Invictus but won’t bother now.

Did you see The Blind Side though? I thought it was a very nice film (and the Turkish subtitles cracked me up: youths was translated as Jews :D).

There are far better things to watch on TV these days (i.e. Fringe, Supernatural, and my fav…Gossip Girl hehe:)

It never fails…I end up watching the same 10 movies over and over because every time I break down and buy one that I think looks good I end up hating it!I have probably seen 2 movies in a theater in the last 20 years….but show me some movie that got terrible revues and tanked in the theaters and I will laugh all the way through it! You should be the new and improved Roger Ebert!

Matt, LOVED Idiocracy to pieces. Definitely a cult classic, and highly UNDER rated.

Watch Idiocracy if you haven’t seen it. Idiocracy is as classic as Office Space. And Avatar, although it is somewhat lacking in plot, is a must see. In 3D if at all possible.

In fact, as you watch it you can imagine substituting either Owen Wilson or Ron Livingston seamlessly. They both have the same deadpan dry delivery. Not to mention they look alike.
